HOW DO I CHARACTERIZE MY STORY?
By Arthur Zulu

If art is a reflection of life, then there should be people in your story. Because in life, people make history. Either for good, or for bad.

It is just as easy to create characters in a story. Now, look around you. Are there not people whose attitude interests or puzzles you? Or do you remember reading of one strange character in a storybook?

So, using your sources you may have developed some characters for your best seller.

Now, in characterization (for that is the name they call it), there are two types: the real characters and the stereotypes. And these characters may either be good or bad as in real life situation. Some are going to play principal roles, while others will play minor roles, also as in true-life situation. Again, they may be of different backgrounds and nationalities.

The following questions will help you to make effective
characterization.

1.Who Should Be a Character?
That depends on the nature of your story. Anything could be a character. In the Bible, a snake and a donkey spoke
(Do they still talk?) And trees were characters in a mock drama. (Someone says they still do speak to those who understand them.) Even the Devil himself had a conference with God. (I don’t think they are still in speaking terms).

So, your characters may be humans (DAVID COPPERFIELD by Charles Dickens), witches (MACBETH by William Shakespeare), animals (ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell), or the Devil (SATANIC VICARS by Arthur Zulu.) You may even wish to make yourself a character in a fiction as some writers have done. Such ones are often heroes, or heroines — they play the most important part, and they never die. I am thinking of Thor, in KONTIKI EXPEDITION by Thor Hayerdall.

2.How Should They Be Named?
First, their names should not be two long and foreign that your reader finds them difficult to remember. Abbreviated names, as in Shakespearean works, also cause problems.

Second, use revealing titles like Dr. and Prof., King and Queen, to help your reader grasp them easily. Historical names are beyond compare in this regard. Like Adolph Hitler. Or Winston Churchill. Your reader may have known about them, thus making understanding easy.

Third. The names of your characters may be used to provide clues to your reader. Like Christian and Morality in THE PILGRIMS’ PROGRESS by John Bunyan.

3. How Many Should They Be?
Not too many, if you don’t want to confuse your reader. The
principal characters should stand clear from the minor characters. I have read a play of two characters.

4. Are My Characters Believable?
If you start by wondering whether your reader may believe your characters or not, you will not excel. After all, even in real life situations, there are persons who behave as if they are not of this world. Your reader may identify with one or two of your characters.

Have you read Charles Dickens? You may have noticed that his characters are larger than life — unbelievable. There was
one of his characters (I can’t remember his name now), in his book, DAVID COPPERFIELD, whose life pre-occupation was the compilation of a dictionary. And there he was, struggling some where in letter “D” or so, in his old age, but still optimistic of reaching his cherished goal before the final call. Do such people live on earth? Yet, Charles Dickens remains the greatest novelist, who has ever lived.

5. How Should They Speak?
You will have to vary the speech patterns of your characters. From the royal and dignified speech of a king, to the learned and pedantic discourse of scientists; from the lowly and untrained language of a court servant, to the meaningless quibbling of a child.

In short, the speeches should reflect the various social, cultural, and educational backgrounds of your characters.

1.What Are My Characters’ Motives?
There should be a motive for the actions of your characters. Or is it not so in life? For example, why do people love, or hate one another? Why do some kill, while others like charity? Why do people work? Or why do they have ambition? Or, to bring the chickens to roost — why do you want to write a best – seller?

If your reader doesn’t find satisfactory motives behind the actions of your characters, then you have not communicated.

7. Do my Characters Contribute to the Development of my Story?
This is a good question. In story writing, you may decide to be he story-teller. Or, you may leave that task to one, or several of your characters. What your characters say, therefore, should have bearing to the subject matter, and the outworking of your story. Put differently, they should do the work you want them to do.

Do you want them to fight over something, or to love or kill
themselves? Which character is doing what, and which characters are in the know, or are ignorant of those actions?

In doing so, you are using your characters to inform your reader. And if you do it well, you would have succeeded in pulling out a good story.

Things To Consider When Choosing Wedding Flowers

Friday, November 21st, 2008

No wedding is complete without flowers: bright, beautiful blooms that symbolize the Spring of your new life together. Now here comes the big decision: what kind of flowers do you use? And how much can you afford to spend on them? Here are some things to consider while planning your flower arrangements:

1. Durability. You don’t want wilted flowers, do you? Consider the weather and temperature conditions. For example, fragile flowers won’t do well in the heat of summer, or will rumple in the strong breeze of a seaside ceremony and reception. Delicate blooms include gardenias, tulips, wild flowers, and lily of the valley.

2. Your motif. Choose flowers that match the theme and color scheme of your wedding. Give your florist a swatch from the cloth used for the dresses of your entourage, and inform her whether the wedding will be during the day or the night (it affects how formal the bouquets should be). You should also consider the venue itself: is it indoors or outdoors, casual or elegant? You should even look at the colors of the walls and curtains!

3. Creativity. Roses and carnations are practically wedding staples, which isn’t a bad thing. But for a unique look, consider mixing them with other blooms, or asking for a particularly unique flower arrangement or bouquet style. Some florists will incorporate crystals, sinamay cloth, ribbons or lace.

4. Meaning. Some flowers are known to symbolize certain things. For example, tulips mean passion and gardenias mean joy, and orange blossoms mean purity. While this doesn’t have to influence your choice, some like to create a “poem bouquet” where flowers are selected to tell the story of their relationship.

The Christmas season is a wondrous time to spend with family and without exception we all want it to end up being as special as you can possibly make it – a good part of the X-mas tradition is proudly displaying a festively appointed dwelling to recognise the festive season. Marriage is Between a Man and a Woman

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Let’s face it if you have been around homosexuals most all straight people have all been called homophobic, which is utter non-sense mostly, I just love women. I am not homophobic. I have had slander put on the Internet about my personal character, using fake screen names, when I found myself inadvertently debating with homosexuals over the gay marriage issue.

All sorts of things and that completely pisses me off, although I realize it is a small minority that is using these tactics, Nevertheless, if the Gay and Lesbian Community really wants to get their way and sooner rather than later it does not make a lot of sense to attack in such ways. The Gay and Lesbian Community will lose allies and friends and reduce their synergy if this continues to be the norm.

Additionally I am owed an apology personally by some of these radical gay fringe terrorists. Every time I see a flagrant gay male between the ages of 17-28 all I can think of is; that person fits the profile of someone who is angry and vindictive, a social time bomb if you will, who knows what they are capable of when no one is watching? Willing to use all possible means ethical or not to get their way.

Willing to say anything, or harm anyone who does not agree, spread hate or even do an unlawful deed or outright criminal act. I have seen it, do denial will not work and I am sure the G&L Community is well aware of this problematic group within the group and probably wants to disown them. This is pure observation and I have witnessed this many times and I assume others who have watched such behavior feel the same. Consider this and observe the gay fringe next time you are out and tell me if I am not right on the money about this.

What Can You Do To Make Your Reception a Success?

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This is something that we’ve started to send to all our clients about a week prior to their wedding. It has really helped both the bride/groom and their families get the most out of their wedding receptions:

Your wedding is about a week away and I just wanted to email you and let you know a few things that you can do to help make your event run smoothly and get the most out of your time at the reception. Please circulate this email to your parents and everyone in your wedding party. The more people that are in tune with what to do that day – the better your event will be.

1. If there are any last minute changes to your itinerary – LET US KNOW AHEAD OF TIME. We need to be prepared and can help you orchestrate things much smoother only if we know about them before it’s too late. We can help guide you as to the best way to flow from one event to the next. Call or email us with those changes immediately. Thank you.

2. All formal photos should be completed by the end of dinner. That means – if you need to get a group photo of your college friends, grandmother or whomever – by the time they clear the main entrée away – that photo needs to happen. If you pull people (and yourselves) out of the party for a group photo – you lose about 25 minutes of dance time. Yes, the photo only takes 5 minutes, but it takes 10 minutes to gather everyone up. It takes you about 10 minutes to walk back into the room as you will keep getting stopped by friends and family. It’s never just a quick shot.

3. If you need to socialize with your guests – do as much of it between courses as you can. Get up, visit a few tables and then go sit back down and eat the next course. If you wait until after dinner to start walking around – you will lose valuable dance time. Be careful not to get behind in the meal. If your guests finish before the two of you, that is not good either. When the next course is set for you, go and eat. You can always finish talking to people later – or better yet – meet them on the dance floor.

4. The end of the meal is critical – both you, your parents and the wedding party need to be in the room. Once you start seeing the wait staff clearing plates – you should STAY IN THE ROOM. We could delay the start of dancing by 10-15 minutes trying to get the key players back in the room. The longer we wait to start – the harder it is to get people focused on the party. We will give you and your parents a 10 minute warning before activities are about to get started – use the bathroom, freshen up, take your smoke break or whatever you need to do – BUT BE BACK IN THE ROOM AND READY TO GO.

5. Once we open dancing up – the more people that come out – the quicker we can get the party on the way. If you really want to help prime the party, both you, your parents and the entire bridal party (and their partners) should spend the first 15 minutes (~3 songs) on the dance floor. Everyone is looking to you to set the tone of the event – if you are out dancing – your guests will follow.

6. If you have to leave the room (and you should really leave the room separately (never together) – leaving one of you in the room to play host for your guests at all times), make sure you quickly go and do what you have to do and return. The longer you are out of the room – the more energy is drained from the party. Also, if you are standing talking with guests be aware of WHERE you stand. If you position yourself next to the exit – you will draw people to you and out of the party. Always position yourself so you pull people away from the exits and near to the dance floor.

7. We will be able to play more of the music that you’ve selected if you dance. If people are not dancing – our first concern is to get people involved before they decide to leave instead. Once we have a good dancing crowd – it’s much easier to fit in more of your & your guests’ requests.

8. Have fun. If you are not having fun – how can you expect your guests to be? Be part of the festivities. Socialize, dance and have the time of your life. Your DJ will be there to guide you every step of the way. If you are unsure as to what to do next – we can help. We will be touching base with you over the course of the event and will let you know if you have been out of the room too long or if we need you to help us refocus attention on the dance floor.

Non-Denominational or Mixed Religion Weddings

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This article explains a few things about weddings, and if you’re interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don’t know.

Couples of mixed religions or who come from families that do not have a strong religious background may choose to have either a non-denominational wedding or a wedding that blends two separate religions. This can be tricky however because many religions may not honor or recognize a wedding unless it is performed according to their own unique guidelines. For this reason it is very important to check with potential officiants and church leaders to ensure that your wedding plans will result in a union that is recognized by both churches. This is significant because you would not want to invest time and money on a marriage that will wind up not being recognized by the church and possibly not even recognized by the government. Whether a couple decides to have a non-denominational wedding, incorporate aspects of both religion into a ceremony that will not be recognized by either faith or participate in two separate religious ceremonies, it is important to remember that their love for each other and their love of their faith are equally important.

If both the bride and the groom have very strong faith backgrounds and wish to have their wedding recognized by their respective churches, they may have to take a few extra steps to ensure that their union is recognized by their churches. Sometimes the only way to do this is to have a wedding ceremony in both churches. This may seem like an unnecessary step but one of the defining criteria of having your marriage recognized by your faith, for many religions, is to have your wedding ceremony in the church. It is simply not possible to do this unless the couple takes the extra steps of having two wedding ceremonies to ensure that they will be both be accepted as a married couple into their faiths.

Another alternative to participating in two separate ceremonies in order to have the union recognized by both churches is to have a non-denominational wedding that is only recognized by the government. Couples may choose this option if they do not have the time or money that would be required to have two separate wedding ceremonies. A couple may choose a compromise that results in neither church recognizing the union. The theory behind this type of choice is that the couple decides that their love for each other is strong enough to survive and that they do not need to have the approval of their churches in order to have a successful and lasting marriage.

It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of weddings is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about weddings.

Still another alternative is to have a non-denominational wedding ceremony at a location in a natural setting. At this type of ceremony the couple has no restrictions and can choose to incorporate either religion into the ceremony in any way that they see fit. They may do this by using traditional prayers and religious songs during the ceremony. While this type of ceremony will not be recognized by the church is does offer the couple the opportunity to incorporate some of the religious traditions of both of their faiths into a beautiful ceremony that successfully blends two religions.

A final alternative is to incorporate one faith fully into the wedding ceremony and incorporate the other faith fully into the wedding reception. This option results in the marriage being recognized by one of the religions but does not allow the other family to feel neglected because their faith is well represented in the traditional activities of the wedding reception. This option is only feasible if the member of the couple who will not have their church recognize the union, is completely accepting and understand of this fact. This is important because the resentment and jealousy that could result from this could be very detrimental to the couple.

Inter-faith couples are on the rise. Years ago it was unheard of to marry someone outside of your faith but this is no longer true and many couples today are inter-faith couples. It is difficult but not impossible to integrate the two faiths in a way that is satisfactory to all of those involved. While the faiths can be blended to create a beautiful wedding, the problem is that many churches will not accept this blended wedding as a union. Sometimes the couple decides that their happiness together is more important than having the church recognize the union so they opt for a non-denominational wedding that is completely devoid of any religious traditions.

I hope that reading the above information was both enjoyable and educational for you. Your learning process should be ongoing–the more you understand about any subject, the more you will be able to share with others.

Reflect the Light of Jesus Christ

Monday, November 17th, 2008

During the Feast of Tabernacles, the Jews had a ceremony of lights. They lit huge golden candlesticks with golden bowls on them and placed them in the Temple area in the Court of the Women. These lights illuminated all of Jerusalem.

Chapter 8 of Book IV of the classic work The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah by Alfred Edersheim, tells us in this connection that the term “light” was specially applied to the Messiah.

It was in this context that Jesus Christ clearly indicated that he was the Messiah when he said “I am the light of the world,” as recorded in John 8:12 (KJV). Christians are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to the world and to help spread the gospel to all the world.

We Are to Walk in the Light

We have been called by God the Father to walk in the light of his truth as the apostle John shows in I John 1:5-7:

“5This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (KJV)

God has given all power in heaven and earth to Jesus Christ, who is head of the Church. Jesus Christ has given his disciples the great commission of spreading the light of the gospel to all nations. We must follow the light of Jesus Christ because a good example is important in fulfilling our calling to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20).

Although Satan may appear as an angel of light, the true light comes from Jesus Christ and the Word of God. They light our path so that we can follow where the light leads with boldness. We are to study God’s Word diligently so that we can see the true light for our journey.

We need the light of God’s Word to guide us in our daily lives at school, at work, in the home, and in the church. We must admit our sins when the light shows us that we are off course, seek God’s forgiveness, and ask Him for a course correction. Sometimes the course we are following seems to be good, but we must be willing to change course as we better understand the Word of God.

We must walk in the light by faith. We must grow in grace and knowledge so that we can better reflect the light of Christ to others (II Peter 3:18).

We Are to Be Lights to the World

Jesus Christ instructs us to be lights as recorded in Matthew 5:14-16

“14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (KJV)

Jesus Christ, the source of light, tells us that we also are to be sources of light. However, the light does not originate with us. We can only reflect the true light that comes from Jesus Christ.

Our good works light the path for others. Nothing teaches others better than does a good example.

People usually do not care how much we know about the Bible. However, they are moved by our example and how much we care about them as shown by our good works.

What are some of the ways that we can reflect the light of Jesus Christ through good works? Our good works do not have to be major events or cost a great deal of money. Little things mean a lot. A card, letter, or telephone call can help to brighten someone’s day. Prayer for those who are sick is something we all can do.

When and Why They Will Glorify God

People who see the good works of Christians will glorify God in the day of visitation as the apostle Peter wrote in I Peter 2:12:

“12Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.” (KJV)

The day of visitation is when God calls them and begins to work with them. They will glorify God in the day of visitation when they view the good works they have seen from Christians more closely. They will see that God is the source of their light.

As we navigate our ships through life’s stormy seas, we should keep our eyes on Jesus Christ the true lighthouse. We should walk in the light of Jesus Christ and the Bible and reflect it to others. We should keep our eyes on the mission of helping to shine the light of the good news of the Kingdom of God to all the world.

The 70 Weeks of Daniel

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Understanding Daniel’s 70 Weeks

Scholars generally agree that each of the seventy weeks represent seven prophetical years.
The seventy weeks are divided into three sections, seven weeks, sixty-two weeks and one week. The first seven weeks are added to the sixty-two, bringing the total to sixty-nine weeks. This would bring us up to the time of Christ. This marks the closing era or last days of Israel evoking the statement from Jesus, “The time is fulfilled…the kingdom of God has drawn near, (Mark 1:14, 15).

Daniel predicts Jesus’ violent crucifixion saying that the Messiah is cut off, that is crucified, after the sixty-ninth week. There can be no mistake therefore that Jesus was crucified in the last or seventieth week of Daniel’s prophecy.

Since Christ was cutoff after sixty-two weeks and because these followed the first seven weeks, then it is clear that Jesus was crucified after “sixty-nine” weeks or in the last, final or seventieth week. Some like to place a 2000 year time-gap between the sixty-ninth and seventieth weeks of Daniel. To do so would violently upset God’s prophetical scheme for the crucifixion of Christ. It would place Jesus’ crucifixion in our future. Thomas Ice and Tim LaHaye have done this very thing with their “gap-theory on Daniel 9:25, 26. See The End Times Controversy, page 341.

Daniel’s seventy weeks mark out the time of Jesus crucifixion and his return in judgment upon the nation of Israel. There is no gap between the sixty-ninth and seventieth weeks. It is a clear testimony that the time of the end has come and gone.

Happiness Is A Natural State of Mind – Claim Yours

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Happiness seems to be elusive for many people. We are asked, “What makes you happy?” as if something can make us happy. Have you watched an infant or a young child? They seem quite ‘happy’ to just ‘BE’no matter what they are doingthey are happy. They are in awe of the world and experience joy with each discovery and accomplishment. Yes, I know children are given every toy imaginable, but the child would be just as happy to have a spoon and metal pan to bang on. Of course children fuss or cry when they are tired, hungry or bored, but while they are physically comfortable and nutritionally satiated, they are ‘happy’ just being.

Unfortunately, when children learn to walk and talk they are told to ’sit down and shut up’i.e. they are subjected to an endless barrage of criticism from those around them. As a result, their psyche becomes filled with negative thoughts that prevent them from experiencing happiness. Children then resort to looking for things outside themselves for happinessthe next toy or thing.

The majority of people arrive into adulthood believing that something will make them happy, such as: when they graduate; when they are twenty-one; when they get a job or get a new job; when they find the right husband/wife; when they buy a bigger or faster car, buy a bigger house, when they get promoted; when they retire, and so on. Happiness, thus, becomes an elusive goal that is anticipated some time in the future. But happiness is not contingent on things or events; it is not a destination, but a state of being. It is not meant to be experienced in the future, but at this very moment, NOWRight Now! Our past is dead and our future is unborn. The only time we live is now. So, the place to be happy is here; the time to be happy is now, and the way to be happy is to make everything we do a moment of awe and wonder, just as you experienced everything as a child.

To regain our natural state of Happiness we need to RELEASE the negativity that clogs our mind. When this is done, we will be free to re-experience our natural state of happiness. It is not what we have, but who we are; not what we possess, but what we enjoy.

How do you get rid of the negativity in your mind? It would be wonderful if the brain had a delete key like a computer. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Therefore, we need to be mindful of everything we think and say. For what we think and say is how we create our reality. The way to create a new realitystate of mindis to STOP the old tapes and feed our minds with more nutritional information. We need emotional and spiritual sustenance for the mind, a.k.a vitamins for the mind. Read good booksthere are many excellent titles to choose from.

I will recommend the books I find the most helpful.

• You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought, Peter McWilliams

• The Road Less Traveled, M. Scott Peck

• Conversations With God – Book I, II, III, Neale Donald Walsch

• Friendship With God, Neale Donald Walsch

• The Power of Unconditional Love, Ken Keyes
