Write for Publicity

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

If you’re looking for a powerful way to get free publicity and build your credibility at the same time, then writing articles may be your answer.

If you’ve been on the Internet for a while, you’ve probably subscribed to a few ezines. Many ezine publishers will include an article written by a guest author. At the end of the article are a few lines of text about the author referred to as bylines or resource box. These lines of text are basically just an advertisement for the writer. They usually contain a couple of lines about the author and a web address.

The writer gives the publisher permission to publish their article, free of charge, in exchange for the publisher including the author’s bylines.

By writing articles and allowing them to be freely published, your articles will have the potential to be viewed by millions of Internet users. They may be published by several ezines with subscriber bases of a few hundred to several thousand. In addition, they may be displayed in ezine archives or on high traffic websites.

Most ezine publishers prefer short articles between 500 and 750 words. Short “tip” articles of just a couple of paragraphs are also very popular. Articles should be formatted to 65 characters per line or less, including spaces, and written in short paragraph sections.

When you begin writing your article, avoid using your standard word processing programs, as they do not allow for proper formatting. Instead, use a text editor such as NotePad. It should already be installed on your desktop.

When you begin typing your article, use a hard carriage return (hit enter) when your text reaches 65 characters, including spaces, and leave a space between your paragraphs. This will enable publishers to easily copy and paste your article into their publication. By taking the time to properly format your article, you will increase your chance of being published significantly.

Most publishers receive many article submissions each week and only select a few to be published. Here are some basic guidelines to assist you in getting published:

(1) Make sure you follow the publishers’ submission guidelines. Articles submitted to publishers that don’t follow the submission guidelines will most likely be deleted.

(2) Make sure your article is properly formatted. Publishers won’t take the time to format your article. They’ll simply delete it and move on to the next article submission.

(3) Keep your bylines down to 6 lines or less. Publishers will not publish articles that contain excessively long bylines.

(4) Select a descriptive title to intrigue your readers. Use a powerful headline that demands attention and try to keep it all on one line.

(5) Use proper grammar and spelling. Publishers will not take the time to edit your article. Make sure you read your article several times and use spellcheck.

(6) Avoid articles that are nothing more than a sales letter. Publishers want quality content and will simply delete an article that is written like a sales letter.

(7) Avoid referring readers to an affiliate URL. Articles containing affiliate links may make your article appear to be biased and untrustworthy.

(8) Write your articles with a sincere desire to teach and inform. Talk to your readers and share your expertise.

Once you’ve written your article, you’ll need to develop a list of publishers that may be interested in publishing it. The best way to accomplish this is to display your articles on your website. Place a subscription box on each of your article pages to enable your visitors to subscribe. This list should be used to send your new articles to your list of publishers.

In addition, you can visit some ezine sites to locate publishers who may be interested in your articles. A good place to start is eZINESearch.

Search through the database for publications that may be interested in the type of article you’ve written.
Another great way to promote your articles is to submit them to article announcement groups. These groups enable writers to submit their articles to an entire group of publishers, completely free.

The Path to Profitable Speaking

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

What follows are excerpts form Mike Moore’s popular manual Public Speaking for Profit and Pleasure. Every month I receive numerous emails from people all over North America asking how I got into the speaking business and how they can too. To respond to these many inquiries I wrote Public Speaking for Profit and Pleasure. Here are ten timely tips, from my manual, to get you started on the path to profitable speaking.

1. You know that you might have what it takes to become a speaker if you feel compelled to speak. The fact that you were drawn to this article and clicked The Path to Profitable Speaking indicates a definite interest and a possible compulsion. If you feel compelled to speak you can easily learn how. You can accomplish whatever you put your mind to.

2. Good speakers enjoy what they do and the audience senses their enjoyment and responds positively. Enthusiasm is essential in an effective speaker.

3. If you want to become a successful, well paid speaker you must become well known. Promotion and publicity are vital to your success.

4. Leave your promotional footprints wherever you go so people find you easily.

5. After each speech ask those who hired you for a written testimonial. Use these testimonials, or parts of them, in your advertising and publicity. I have never had people refuse to provide a testimonial for me. Sometimes I have had to remind them, but no one has ever refused.

6.Access free publicity whenever possible. Write and submit press releases frequently. Writers and editors are always looking for new story material and your press release could result in an interview and a story being written about you, your work and/or your publications.

7. Some new speakers say that it is difficult to establish a reputation as a speaker when many businesses are reluctant to hire unknowns to in-service their employees. I solved this problem by offering to speak free of charge …with certain conditions attached of course.

8. To get speaking engagements you must present yourself to people looking for speakers. Every community has an abundance of organizations, associations and service groups in need of speakers for their conferences, banquets and in-service sessions. Make yourself known to them.

9.Write and record material related to the topics you speak on and offer these products for sale as back of the room items after every speech. Sales of these back of the room items frequently exceed the speaking fee you receive. Publish on demand using your computer and printer. Only have your products produced professionally when you see that they are selling well.

10. Promote yourself and your products within each speech, but in just the right dosage. Too much self promotion and you can turn your audience against you. Too little and they might ignore your products altogether.

Good luck on the path to profitable speaking.

What is a Wedding Crasher?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

There are many people that get a lot of fun out of crashing weddings. This is when they intrude on someone’s wedding that they do not know. This is something that many people do for a pastime and as a night out. However it may be fun for them, it can be a disaster if it is not planned right.

Sometimes a wedding crasher will just pop into someone’s wedding inexpediently. They will walk in like they are family and act as if nothing is wrong. There are some occasions where people will questions his or her presence and find out who this dressed up stranger is. Other times, they will go unnoticed.

In some cases, the wedding crasher will give a made up explanation of who they are and how they know the happy couple. This will, in some cases work and in other times, the crasher will be exposed. If the crasher is accepted into the wedding as part of the family, they will have the opportunity to have the most fun that they have ever had.

The best part; about being accepted into a strange wedding as a wedding crasher is that you can do anything that you want, because you will never see these people again. You can have as much punch as you would like and do as many crazy stunts that you can possibly come up with.

Dancing and fun is just part of the fun that can be had by a wedding crasher. It is also a great opportunity to get to know interesting people and make new friends. They can talk to as many people as they want without blowing their cover. They may even use these conversations as ways to understand the wedding couple and help their wedding crashing a little easier.

Being a wedding crasher is a risky business. If you get caught, you may face a very unhappy crowd of people. They may just ask you to leave or they could get a little physical. They may take it badly and get angry with you. If you are lucky, you will just have the opportunity to leave without having to face the police being called.

As a wedding crasher, you will have a lot of fun and get to meet new people. You will also have a new way to get a night out on the town for free. The one thing that you may want to consider is bringing a gift. Some crashers will wrap up an empty box or give an empty unsigned card. This is just an option so that you do not look like another cheap relative. That is something that you do not want to be faced with.

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Custom colour using cheaper printer inks is quite popular for the creation of unique documents and brochures for promotional and presentation purposes. Usage of special coloured ink and inkjet print cartirdges is quite common in custom colour printing services.

Custom Colour Printing: The New Trend

Debt Settlement versus Bankruptcy

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Many people deal with money problems at some point in their life For that reason, unrecoverable debt will likely crop up. Families can confront these setbacks due to employment loss, separation, abrupt loss in the family or just plain bad individual financial supervision. Businesses usually come across this adversity within the 1st couple years of operation. At fault for a company failure can stretch from increased competition, accidents, loss of important clients to distinguish a few. No matter the reason, unrecoverable debt might lead to bankruptcy. Nevertheless, there are bankruptcy alternatives that might mitigate damage to your personal credit report and your company credit standing.

Insolvency can be definable as a lack of ability of a company or an individual to remunerate money owed to a credit granter. When filed, the defaulter is obligated to release all non-exempt property and assets for sale. While individual items are held, you also promise a particular portion of your earned profit to the creditors based on a repayment agreement. Your FICO scores will become low for a long time, which implies that you won’t be able to obtain funding for several private or business organisation for a extended time.

Troubles such as unpaid debt may stimulate incredible worry. Bankruptcy judicial proceedings are exceedingly harsh and can lead to bitter thoughts and deeds. Searching for beneficial ways out of a bad position before you get to dissolution court of law is advisable. Debt resolution could perhaps be the alternative for you.

Perhaps you will ask, “How come my lenders are willing to tolerate debt settlement?” The truth is that any substitute is advantageous to the creditor compared to bankruptcy. Alternatives to financial insolvency are invaluable to the financial institute. The lender will be able to recover a part of the funds that the lenders are owed and you are capable to handle. Allowing a debt negotiation program that is somewhat less than the original total you initially owed is far better than zero.

Debt settlement is an exceedingly advantageous option when compared with insolvency for you, as a private citizen or a commercial enterprise owner. Especially when you are taking the future into consideration. Bankruptcy should be avoided at all costs given the fact that borrowing will be nearly unattainable for any personal or business concerns you perhaps will experience at a later date. On that point, there is no fresh slate; insolvency follows wherever you go. Irrespective of what variety of debt you have obtained, initially seek a debt settlement plan as the primary choice when contemplating insolvency.

Developing Characters That Live through Dialogue and Action

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

If characters don’t come to life on the page or computer screen, a writer has failed to create a good story. Yes, other components are also necessary to provide a complete story, but characters must live through the author’s words. Believable dialogue and action breathes life into characters.

Dialogue can reveal character. According to Ellen Macaulay, one of the first things editors do is “skim a submission for effective, realistic dialogue; words that sound like they would actually come out of your character’s mouth.”

Since dialogue reveals the speaker’s personality, emotion, and relationships to other characters, an author needs a few techniques to use. One way is to use different varieties of English: slang, dialect, formal English, or other speech patterns. Another technique would be for a writer to indicate how the characters speak: murmur, shout, advise, console, whine, brag. Manner of speech reveals much about personalities and emotions.

Observing and noting the world around us helps us choose the right details and to write distinctive dialogue. Listening to the way people talk, express themselves gives us the details that cause characters to live.

Actions of characters are often tied closely to dialogue. One way this happens is when dialogue shows what is happening rather than expository details telling. Another is to have the character act before, during, or right after he speaks.

Dictates of writing once insisted that anything other than the word said should be used. Then the cycle went towards using only said. Now the cycle swings back to avoiding said as much as possible. One way to avoid using said or any synonym is to the have the character act.

Jane sighed and shook her head. “Why can’t I ever learn?”

In the example above we know that Jane spoke, and we learn something about her at the same time.

Bharti Kirchner states in “Get Started,” The Writer, March 2006, “Action speaks louder than description. Nothing delineates a person better than her actions.” Action of characters not only makes them breathe and live, but it moves the story along.

Knowing how characters move helps the reader “see” them. However, such details should be worked into the story not explained in detail all at one time. If Jane has a habit of tossing her head, nibbing on her lower lip, and twisting her fingers around each other, those actions should be revealed if and when appropriate in the story. Choosing only a few details and weaving them into the story rather than lumped into one paragraph not only allows the reader to have a visual impression of the character, but also adds to the believability.

Other ways exist to help make characters live, but dialogue and action are two that make them breathe and also help keep the story moving.

Make Your Communication Come Alive

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Design and layout can make your communication come alive and your
message immediately apparent. Now, with so much technology at hand, design becomes much easier, but you must develop the ability to plan and visualize what you want to convey. Then decide what will appeal to your readers and help them understand the material.

Plan to use spacing, underling, indenting, numbering, and different sizes and
types of lettering to make your message more visually appealing and
understandable. Learn to think in terms of text formats that set off paragraphs; typefaces to denote sections; use of graphs and colors; drawings, flowcharts, and lists that promote your massage and reinforce it to your readers.

Think about your content, know your readers and decide what, precisely, they need to know. Decide what you want to emphasize, and how you will create special displays.

Examine your text for ways to make it visually more appealing. Use white space to create the impression that your communication is easy to read and create tables to display large important groups of data.

Here are four guidelines to aid you in designing graphics that are understandable at a glance:

1. Reduce graphics to their simplest, clearest elements.

2. Use complete titles that answer the who, what, why, when, where, and how questions.

3. Locate graphics near the related text.

4. Make graphics appropriate to their contents in size and arrangement.

Remember that graphics supplement your written message; they don’t replace it.

The last thing you will need to do is pay special attention to the layout of text and images. The eye focuses first on the upper outside corner of a left-hand page and the lower outside corner of a right-hand page.

And above all, tests read your communication and make any necessary changes.

By following these guidelines for design and layout, you will be able to make any communication come alive. And in today’s world of technology, desktop publishing and computer capabilities create many possibilities.
